How can you instantly multiply the potential revenue of any game title? What stops a game from being successful overseas? While there are many factors that contribute to the critical, fiscal and popular success of a game title, there are also many issues that could sabotage a company’s best intentions and years of hard work.

Most game developers and publishers are well aware of the need for localization, but far fewer are familiar with the concept of “culturalization”, the process by which content is adapted for a broader, diverse gaming audience. With at least 50% of the global game industry’s revenue originating from localization, and most growth occurring beyond North America, it’s critical for game developers to not only localize their content but also fundamentally design their games for a global audience.

With the use of many pertinent examples, Kate will take you through a quick overview of game localization and how it can actually empower your game title, before she delves into the tricky geopolitical and cultural issues that can sabotage your game’s success (or worse).

About Kate Edwards:

As the founder and principal consultant of Englobe Inc., a Seattle-based niche consultancy for content culturalization, Kate is a unique hybrid of an academic geographer, writer, and corporate strategist, built upon a passion for global cultures and media technologies. Formerly as Microsoft’s first Geopolitical Strategist in the Geopolitical Strategy team she created and managed, Kate was responsible for protecting against geopolitical and cultural content risks across all Microsoft products and locales.

In the Microsoft Studios (and across the company), she implemented a “geopolitical quality” review process and was personally responsible for identifying potentially
sensitive issues in all 1st party and many 2nd party games between 1995 and 2005. Since leaving Microsoft, she has provided guidance on a wide range of geopolitical and cultural
issues, and she continues to work on games such as Dragon Age 1 & 2, Modern Warfare 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dance Central 1 & 2, and Mass Effect 3. Kate is also
the founder/chair of the Game Localization Special Interest Group in the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), a board of directors member of the IGDA Seattle
Chapter, the co-organizer of the Game Localization Summit at GDC, and a regular columnist for MultiLingual Computing magazine.

Scott Crabtree

Scott Crabtree earned his Cognitive Science degree from Vassar in 1988. Immediately afterwards he worked on artificial intelligence software including expert systems. He started working at the first of several game development companies in 1996. Serving as a Software Engineer, Game Designer, Producer, and Entrepreneur, Scott is proud to have worked on game development with companies including Microsoft, Mattel, Disney, LEGO, Nike and more. He’s published games for PS2, Xbox, PC, and mobile phones including the iPhone.

Crabtree is a highly rated speaker who’s presented multiple times at both GDC and the IGDA Leadership Forum.

He is fascinated by and passionately studies organizational development, human psychology, neuroscience, and the science of happiness and well-being. He left Intel in 2012 to work full time on helping people and organizations apply neuroscience and psychology to become happier and more productive. David Edery

David Edery is the CEO of Spry Fox, an independent studio that has developed or co-developed titles such as Steambirds, Triple Town, Panda Poet, and Realm of the Mad God. Previously, David was the worldwide games portfolio manager for Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Arcade service.

Jeremiah Slaczka

As a ten year veteran of the games industry, Jeremiah “Miah” Slaczka is best known for his creation of the multi-million unit selling franchises Scribblenauts and Drawn to Life. Jeremiah focuses on inventing new IP, creative direction of all 5TH Cell projects, and drives the company direction and vision.

In 2003, Jeremiah, along with Joseph Tringali and Brett Caird, co-founded 5TH Cell Media, with a concrete vision to focus on original IP and become an industry leader in the development of one-of-a-kind, creative, AAA titles.

Having just released his first iOS game, Run Roo Run, Miah is now focusing on the final stretch of his first XBLA title, Hybrid, as well as 2 more unannounced titles.

Bob Berry

Bob is founder and CEO of Uber Entertainment, makers of the hit XBLA game Monday Night Combat and the follow up free to play sequel, Super Monday Night Combat. Bob is also CEO of imba Entertainment, a new start-up that recently released Moonbreakers in the Chrome Web Store.

Over the last two decades he has been involved in nearly all aspects of game development including game design, engine programming, audio design, production, marketing, and business. His current focus is the development of UberNet, the F2P platform which supports both games. Bob serves as an advisory board member to the Seattle IGDA chapter and as a member of the board of directors of Kids Quest Children’s Museum.
