Seattle Indies West Side Social

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 7:00pm   1534 1st Ave South, Seattle, Washington

It’s that time again! Come have a drink, share stories and mingle with your fellow Seattle indies!

This month we’re going to try something a little different. Mingling is awesome, but a lot of you have expressed interest in supplementing that experience with a short period of presentations and demos of local games, so we’re going to give it a shot!
Socializing is still the focal point of the event, but we’re going to set aside an hour or so for people to give a few short presentations. We’re looking for 3-5 volunteers who would be willing to present for 5-15 minutes.

Did you make a game jam game recently that you’d like to show off?
Want to publicly debut the game you’re currently working on?
Have an interesting experience with a publisher that you think your fellow indies could benefit from?

The format is extremely flexible! If you just want to show your game, that’s great. If you’d like to walk us through your design process in more detail, that’s cool too! Sign-ups are on a first come, first serve basis, in the interest of fairness. If we have more presenters than we can fit in an hour then we’ll start filling up the roster for next month’s meetup.

The other exciting development for this month’s social is that the crew at 17-Bit have graciously offered to let us use their office space for the meetup! It’s a little bit of a trek compared to our usual Capitol Hill haunts, but the venue is spacious, private and comes equipped with a projector that we can use for the presentation segment.

The Uber/Kickstarter event details, and a special Congratulations…

The Anatomy of a Successful Kickstarter Campaign

Wednesday, 23 January 7pm at Bungie Studios.

Crowd-funding game development is changing our industry.  Kickstarter and similar portals are changing the relationship between the developer and their end users, bringing them together much earlier in the development process, often even before the first lines of code have been written.  Crowd-funding has the potential to turn the traditional model of publisher funded games on its head.  But, this is uncharted territory and the success or failure of these projects will have an enormous impact on the long term impact of this funding model.

Uber Entertainment’s Planetary Annihilation Kickstarter campaign was among the top five highest funded game projects on Kickstarter in 2012, raising over 2.2 Million dollars.  Bob Berry, CEO at Uber, will provide some insight into the process; what went right; and, what went wrong. His presentation will be followed by Q&A.

Don’t miss this intriguing and enlightening presentation, brought to you by IGDA Seattle and hosted by Bungie!  Following the presentation we have a few Kickstarter books to raffle thanks to our new executive director – speaking of her, see below….

Bob Berry is Founder and CEO of Uber Entertainment. Over the last two decades, Bob has been involved in nearly every aspect of game development including game design, engine programming, audio design, production, marketing, and business development. After three years in the doctoral program at Japan’s Gifu University, he decided to instead focus on his first game company. After shipping the critically acclaimed PC FPS Devastation, he moved to Seattle to join Gas Powered Games where he contributed as an engine programmer and producer on Supreme Commander and Demigod. In 2008 he started Uber Entertainment, makers of the hit XBLA game Monday Night Combat and its free to play sequel, Super MNC. Most recently Uber raised over $2 million via Kickstarter to fund their next game, Planetary Annihilation.

A Special Congratulations

To IGDA Seattle’s own Kate Edwards, she has stepped up from the Chapter Board to head up the organization as Executive Director!  Her leadership and skills will be an amazing boon to the organization, great work Kate!

The Loss of a Chapter Founder, Dr. Christopher Erhardt

The IGDA Seattle chapter was saddened to learn on Tuesday, December 4, of the passing of Christopher Erhardt, one of the founding members of our chapter. As a video game educator, Chris was instrumental in launching the careers of literally thousands of developers.

He was most recently the founding director of the US operations of the Academy of Interactive Entertainment in Seattle and Lafayette (Louisiana). He will be sorely missed and our condolences go out to his wife Madeleine and their children Emilio, Estelle and Emma.
